Transforming Self-Talk for International Medical Graduates (IMGs), MDs, and other professionals.

We often face unique challenges and self-doubt. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we have beliefs that may be preventing us from getting what we want. We might feel stuck, lost, and overwhelmed. So, how can we change this?

By transforming our beliefs and our self-talk, we can empower us to recognize our worth and capabilities. If we can start using empowering language, we can change our outcomes.

Here's how you can shift the narrative:

Affirming Your Value

  • Old Pattern: "I am not as good as ...."
  • New Pattern: "I bring a unique and valuable perspective to... My experiences enrich and add value to..."

Acknowledging Your Worth

  • Old Pattern: "I am not worthy."
  • New Pattern: "I am worthy and deserving of success. My dedication and hard work make a difference."

Recognizing Your Competence

  • Old Pattern: "I need to study or train more to be at their level."
  • New Pattern: "I am knowledgeable and continually learning. My commitment to education enhances my skills."

Practical Steps to Transform Self-Talk

  1. Reflect on Accomplishments: Regularly remind yourself of your achievements and the hurdles you've overcome to be where you are.
  2. Challenge Comparisons: Avoid comparing yourself to others. Focus on your unique journey and the strengths you bring.
  3. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Each step forward is a testament to your resilience and determination.
  4. Positive Affirmations: Use affirmations tailored to your journey and goals. Write them down and repeat them daily.

I also employ positive affirmation as a way to train my subconscious brain.

Example Affirmations for IMGs

  • "I bring a diverse and valuable perspective to ...."
  • "My experiences and skills are an asset to any healthcare team."
  • "I am dedicated and capable. I am continually growing and improving."
  • "I have overcome many challenges and am proud of my journey."
  • "I am worthy of success and respect."

By adopting positive self-talk, you can build confidence and resilience, helping you to navigate challenges and achieve your professional goals. Remember, your journey and experiences make you a valuable asset to the medical community!
